    what is zzyw

    zzyw is an art and research duo formed by Yang Wang and Zhenzhen Qi in New York, 2017. It produces software applications, simulation, and text as instruments to examine the cultural, political and educational imprints of computation.

    Zhenzhen Qi

    Dr. Zhenzhen Qi 漆贞贞 (b. 1983, Ürümqi, China) is an artist, educator, and researcher from China, currently based in Brooklyn, New York. She recently accepted a position as an assistant professor in the Digital Media & Design Department at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Qi earned her BS from the University of California, Berkeley, an MPS from New York University's Interactive Telecommunication Program (ITP), and was awarded an EdD from Teachers College, Columbia University in 2023. Her doctoral research focused on software simulation as a mode of collective re-making and un-looping. From 2014 until her recent appointment at UConn, Dr. Qi taught as an adjunct professor at institutions including The Cooper Union, New York University, Teachers College Columbia University, City University of New York (CUNY), and Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. In addition to teaching, Dr. Qi has given talks and led workshops at venues such as the Power Station of Art, New Museum, New York Creative Tech Week, Museum 2050, and Asia Art Archive in America. She holds fellowships from Columbia University Teachers College. Dr. Qi has been an artist-in-residence at Pioneer Works, Eyebeam, and was a member of NEW INC, the New Museum’s art and tech incubator.

    Yang Wang

    Yang Wang 黃瓜 (b. 1989, Zibo, China) is an art director and software engineer based in New York. His work utilizes computation as both a creative tool and a critical subject of examination. Wang recreates simulated environments to study and question technology's cultural, political, and social impacts. He was an artist-in-residence at Eyebeam (2023) and Pioneer Works' three-month technology residency (2020) in Brooklyn. He was a member of NEW INC, the New Museum's art and tech incubator (2019-2020). Wang's work has been exhibited by Rhizome at the New Museum, Power Station of Art, the first state-run museum of contemporary art in China, and the National Museum of China in Beijing. Wang has taught courses on simulation, worldbuilding, and computational art at The Cooper Union and Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts as an adjunct professor. He received his MPS degree in Interactive Telecommunications Program from New York University and his BFA in Digital Art from the University of Science and Technology Beijing. Previously, Wang worked as a creative developer at the design firms Rockwell Group and Potion in New York. His interdisciplinary practice brings together his background in computer engineering, media arts, digital design, and media studies.
